City of design day nineteen – oliver smith
Monday, 14 November 2023
Oliver Smith is a designer-maker whose practice exemplifies the dynamic role of the contemporary object maker. Although focusing on traditional silversmithing techniques, Smith also makes use of small scale manufacturing methods and industrial design processes, resulting in a practice that bridges the gap between craft and industry.
Oliver Smith’s cutlery and serving ware is of particular note. Fatware, his collaboration with renowned designer Robert Foster of F!nk + Co, consists of two occasional table knives inspired by stone tools, whilst Smith’s collection of cutlery, knives and serving ware features flowing lines, bold proportions and pure forms.
A graduate of Sydney College of the Arts, and the Australian National University in the Gold and Silversmithing Workshop, Smith is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2010 Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship, and his work can be found in public and private collections, including the Art Gallery of South Australia.
