city of design day twenty – vibe hotel
Tuesday, 15 November 2023
Designed by Bates Smart, the Vibe Hotel at the Canberra International Airport was influenced by the geometry of Walter Burley Griffin’s plan for Canberra. Bates Smart’s design utilises both circular and axial geometries to form a unique building that includes 191 rooms over six levels, and a full height atrium. At its base, the atrium boasts a bar, restaurant and lounges with a luxe interior inspired by the ‘golden age’ of air travel in the 1960’s and 70’s.
The building was completed in 2015 and has already won numerous awards; including the 2016 Master Builders and Cbus Excellence in Building Award and the Australian Institute of Architects (ACT chapter) 2016 awards for Commercial Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Light in Architecture.
