Sustainable Houses: Derek Wrigley’s Kalma House
Join Jenny Edwards, Director and Scientist from Light House Architecture & Science and take a look inside this home that encapsulates the DESIGN Canberra theme of Transformation.
Kalma House is a fabulous example of Derek Wrigley’s experimental work in solar passive design and early solar hot water heating. The Light House team were delighted to visit this terrific light-filled home and advise the new owners on minor thermal upgrades in 2021. To everyone’s delight, Jenny was able to share this news with Derek shortly before he died.
Derek was much more than an architect, he was an inventor and a sculptor and always retained a keen interest in the issues of design and art. In July 1970, the Canberra Art Club convened a meeting to discuss a proposal to establish a branch of the Craft Association in the ACT. Derek was a member of this group. In 1971, the organisation that would evolve to be called Craft ACT was formed.
