Contemporary Architecture: Verity Lane Market
DESIGN Canberra is the primary outreach program of Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre, a not-for-profit community organisation. 2021 marked Craft ACT’s 50th year of supporting designers, makers, crafts people and artists at every stage of their careers and a great opportunity to celebrate Canberra’s 1970’s architecture.
Verity Lane Market is a chef-driven food hall that once again places the heritage-listed Sydney Building at the civic heart of Canberra. Stripped back to reveal the original construction for the first time, contemporary additions playfully recall the various eras of building’s heyday. With a long and fascinating history of multiple uses, from Verity Hewitt’s Bookshop to the iconic 1970s Private Bin nightclub, this site has been given new life with the rear half of the building entirely rebuilt across four of the narrow original blocks to address the lane and open ground floor connections from Northbourne Avenue.
