Design Revisited: Graphic Design in the 1970’s with designers David Lancashire and Dominic Hofstede

Talk

DESIGN Canberra’s Design Revisited series is a unique opportunity to celebrate design history, design education and design excellence in a city of design. This Design Revisited event, held at the iconic Shine Dome, celebrates the work of graphic designer, and illustrator, David Lancashire.

David studied fine arts at the Circle Studio from the age of eleven, and went into design studios and advertising before emigrating to Australia in 1966. In 1976, he started his own studio in Melbourne, working on packaging, corporate identity programmes and publication design. He had a life changing experience when he began working with indigenous Australians on visitor centres and museums in 1993, interpreting one of the oldest cultures on earth. He is a past president of the Melbourne ADC, has judged on many awards committees (in Melbourne and nationally), was a member of the Advisory Committee at RMIT Photography Department, the Stamp Advisory Board of Australia Post and RMIT Graphic Design, and was the Victorian President of the Australian Graphic Design Association 1992–93. He was admitted into the Victorian Government Design Hall of Fame in 1999. He gave masterclasses at the design conference Everything In Between and Swinburne National Centre for Design.

David is now semi-retired currently working on his art and a large indigenous project with his long term collaborators Troppo Architects. In conversation with Dominic Hofstede, David will delve into his observations on the transformation of the graphic design industry.
