New Shoots takes the epicormic growth that bursts forth from burnt eucalypts as its conceptual starting point, drawing upon the curatorial theme Transformation.
Epicormic branches are those on a tree that sprout from dormant buds. They are a particularly prominent response of eucalyptus trees to bushfires, with green shoots bursting from seeming dead branches. Epicormic growth brings new life and hope from dormant structures, a process of recovery and rebuilding after stress and devastation, a transformation for the next phase of growth.
