Michael was born and raised in Melbourne and after graduating from high school attended the University of Ballarat. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a painting major, in 1997, predominately studying under the tuition of the painters Doug Wright and Iain Reid. On graduation Michael explored a range of short courses and part time jobs before deciding to enlist into the Australian Army in 1998. The decision was prompted by a desire to travel and to serve his nation. Michael experienced a wide range of employments including Aircraft Technician (Blackhawk helicopters), Senior Military Self Defence Instructor, Communications Officer, Operations Officer and Cyberspace specialist. He completed four operational tours; Timor, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Tactical Assault Group East Counter Terrorism Unit.

Michael continued to draw and paint throughout his military career, documenting his experiences of conflict. In 2014 he recommenced formal art study by undertaking a Masters of Creative Arts and began once again to pursue a professional art career. He completed his Masters exhibition in 2016 before moving to Canberra and taking up a studio within the ANCA facilities in Mitchell. Michael’s current art practice includes painted works, sculpture and drawing.

Visitors to Michael’s studio in Mitchell can expect to see a range of figurative sculptures and drawings in progress as he prepares for exhibitions in 2019. He is exploring new mediums and using the traditional practice of sculpting and drawing for life to hone his skills. Michael’s current works explore the impact military service has had on his perceptions of the human form.
