National Library of Australia collection
A visit to National Library of Australia is must for design lovers. The building, designed by architect Walter Bunning (1912-1977) and completed in 1968, is in a Contemporary Classical style that combines mid-century design elements with Classical architectural principles. A lintel by Tom Bass greets visitors and seven copper panels by Arthur Robb are located on the outer wall of the building on the lakeside. Inside visitors will find stunning building art, including three foyer tapestries by Mathieu Matégot and dalle de verre coloured glass windows by Leonard French. Venture into the Main Reading Room and you will see examples of bespoke furniture designed by Fred Ward and tapestries by Alice Kettle. Another tapestry, designed by John Young, is also on display in the Special Collections Reading Room. In the Treasures Gallery there is a small display on architect Robin Boyd and the Small Home Service. Opening hours | Monday – Thursday 10am – 8pm; Friday – Saturday 10am – 5pm; Sunday 1:30 – 5pm
