Nicola Dickson

Nicola Dickson (BA 2003: PhD 2010) is a multimedia artist who exhibits throughout Australia with many of her works held in private and public collections. Her practice focuses on painting but also includes drawing, wallpaper design, installation and ceramics. She established Storybird Studio in Fyshwick in 2019. It is the creative workspace for her practice and collaborative projects she undertakes with other artists such as Hanna Hoyne. Hanna Hoyne (MA 2004; PhD 2009) is a sculptor, designer & researcher, exhibiting in Australia, Germany & Hong Kong. Since 1998 she has created interactive sculpture & sculptural garments for performance, theatre & slow fashion. Since 2006 Hanna worked as university lecturer & researcher, and now works freelance in public space design. Recent public commissions are Crying Dinghy (2018) at Henry Rolland Park in Canberra, and Soul Mine (Moonvessel & Horn) (2019) in Linear Park in Sydney.

STUDIO SHOW & ART ACTIVITY
Storybird Studio will be set up with displays that allow visitors to gain insights into the working processes of both artists. There will also be a range of works available for purchase including etchings, ceramics and cards by Nicola while Hanna will show her sculptural wall works, a collection of small sculptural wearables and some of her ‘up-cycled’ clothing for children.

During the event the artists will provide an activity table of sculptural rocks that can be painted for a small fee and then taken home as gifts or mementos of the day. This activity is dependent on the weather as it will be outdoors to ensure optimal social distancing.

The activity involves providing the materials (a range of Posca markers and polished rocks) for children or adults to decorate and keep. There will be a small fee to undertake the activity, we will be requesting that interested peoples do not use cash. Prior to starting, hand sanitising will be requested.

Two tables, each 2 m x 1 m, will be set up outside on either side of the studio entry door at least 2 metres apart. There will be three chairs placed at each table (one at each end on one side and one in the middle on the other side). A range of rocks to choose from will be spread along the table, so that participants aren’t touching all the rocks as they select which one to work on. The pens will also be spread along the table. There will be a dedicated assistant who will wipe the pens with sanitiser after each use. The same assistant will be counting numbers entering the studio and urging hand cleaning.

The activity will be cancelled in the event of rain.
