Welcome to Wasteland

Welcome to Wasteland presents projects by creative disciplines – including architects, industrial designers, furniture makers and researchers – exploring the use of waste materials, offering visitors an insight into how leading practitioners are approaching Australian waste issues, not just with a sense of obligation but as an opportunity of crisis.

Welcome to Wasteland is an exhibition originally shown in Melbourne during Melbourne Design week 2019. The exhibition will be brought to Canberra’s Nishi Gallery by Canberra-based designer maker, Tom Skeehan, and Melbourne-based designer, Dale Hardiman. Coinciding with the 2019 DESIGN Canberra festival, Welcome to Wasteland will conjure ideas about Utopia in its contemplation of waste production, and the role of design as a corrective to the implications of consumer culture upon ideals of a utopian future.

DESIGN Canberra acknowledges the Ngunnawal people as the traditional custodians of the ACT and surrounding areas. We honour and respect their ongoing cultural and spiritual connections to this country and the contribution they make to the life of this city and this region. We aim to respect cultural heritage, customs and beliefs of all Indigenous people.
