What is a micro unit? And could you live in one?
Very small dwellings aren’t a new thing—just ask anyone in Tokyo or Hong Kong!—but they are now being viewed as a viable housing option in other housing markets across North America and Europe. These new micro units are imbued with a design sensibility that makes the spaces stylish and liveable, as well as small and affordable. Micro units respond to a variety of pressures in our cities, including the cost and availability of land, the desire of people to live in well located housing that they can also afford, ecological sustainability, and even as a counter to the McMansion.
CHC Affordable Housing is a not-for-profit affordable housing provider. We have been looking into the suitability and viability of micro units as an innovative and resilient housing option in Canberra. To help us find out, we’ve built a full scale model of a micro unit, and we’d love your opinion! Come in, wander around, and imagine living in a micro unit.
