This exhibition will display the outcomes of ‘Multiples and Production: The Unique Offering’, a new course offered by the ANU School of Art. Undergraduate students from a range of disciplines—furniture, glass, textiles, and gold and silversmithing—have been presented with one simple, yet complex question: Why make anything for a world already full of ‘stuff’?
Using the domestic table as a location and setting, students were introduced to a field encompassing bespoke and industrial production, sustainability and disposability. Leading students through design methodologies and exercises, this course and resulting exhibition operated outside the usual disciplinary domains by interrogating the way we produce, consume and understand domestic objects. Students engaged with sites and traditions (the table), value-laden questions (What is the place of sustainability or emotion in design?), new technologies (CAD/CAM manufacture) and industry representatives in live pitching exercises. This exhibition showcases finished products and prototypes, and highlights the rigours of research and practice-led enquiry.
