Six Wiluna is a shared workshop in Fyshwick that seeks to nurture local talent and keep creative people in Canberra, a place that has for too long been stripped of its home-grown talent by the temptation of other cities. Established in 2014 by studio director Elliot Bastianon, the workshop occupies an early building that originally housed one of Canberra’s first joiner’s workshops. It accommodates five people working in various disciplines, including furniture, gold and silversmithing and sculpture, each of whom have access to a comprehensive suite of wood working machinery. The advantages of a communal studio in Canberra are far-reaching. It helps local makers by providing them with the opportunity to develop their own work. Six Wiluna is testimony to the fact that Canberra is not a place of grey government buildings and public servants, but somewhere to stimulate one’s imagination. This open studio event features Elliot Bastianon, Luke Batten, Andrew Carvolth, Nicholas Harper and Sam Ryrie.
