In this new performance by Canberra choreographer James Batchelor commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, the moving body is a construction site. Smooth Translation is a process of receiving and transmitting form.
An ode to master sculptor Barbara Hepworth, the work examines carving as an entry point to the interiority of matter. It is a choreography of sculpting, building and forming a landscape, a moment of translation from one body to another.
