Suburban Dreams Past and Present is a working exhibition of the Modernist Living experience from 1960 to now. Townsend + Associates Architects will have on display a selection of their residential projects that reinterpret modernist influences for the new century. They are all environmentally responsive, but primarily are works of enduring pleasure and practicality for their owners.
The office of Townsend + Associates Architects is in a 1962 residence by architect Neville Ward. The house epitomises the mid-century suburban dream of futuristic living within a bush and suburban setting. It continues to function as a design ‘petrie dish’ for Townsend + Associates Architects’ explorations in residential design, new century futuristic living and finding beauty and function in the suburbs.
No. 212 was futuristic in 1962 … it is an elevated glass and timber box in the manner of Seidler and includes solar panels, insulated lining panels and ramped access. The bedrooms are an exercise in minimalism. The living areas are equally simple but with expanding views to the bush and city. It is enlightening to see how modest materials and components were used and how the design remains contemporary.
