Civic Square Pavilion

The 2019 Design Canberra Pavilion provides a sculptural intervention into the otherwise vast emptiness of Civic Square. By carefully situating the scheme’s flowing geometry within the seating edge provided by the square’s existing fountain, the pavilion’s design both reclaims the civic function of the square through the creation of a new urban room for formal and informal festival events while reinforcing the important Ainslie City Hill axis as a gateway to the festival’s homebase: Craft ACT.

The Design Canberra Pavilion is a key element of the 2019 Design Canberra Festival with the initiative instigated by Artistic Director Rachael Coghlan, CEO of Craft ACT + Design Centre, in collaboration with the University of Canberra (UC) with project leadership by Max Maxwell. The installation was fabricated by undergraduate architecture students at the University of Canberra.

The collaboration involves many contributors and we are highly appreciative of the supporters of the project and to the student cohort. The project has been made possible with the generous sponsorship of platinum partner the University of Canberra, engineering support from Sellick Consultants, material support from Cardboard Tubes and with generous support from the ACT Government under the City Renewal Authority’s City Grants program.
