DESIGN Canberra and Canberra BMW are calling for students and professionals to submit designs for the 2021 Car Wrap Competition.

The 2021 car wrap competition is proudly presented in partnership with Canberra BMW, the University of Canberra and ROJO Customs.

The car wrap competition is open to the public, students and professionals who could see their design wrapped around a brand new BMW and take home a cash prize and more.

DESIGN Canberra is seeking four vibrant and exciting designs in each of these four categories:

1. Garden City (university students) – BMW M3 Competition sedan
Canberra is one of the few designed national capital cities. The foundations for the contemporary design of Canberra were laid down by Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin. The design was unique and beautiful drawings by Marion recognised the need to celebrate nature and respect the land. The Griffins’ vision for the urban landscape was expressed through a strong geometry derived from the natural topography of the surrounding mountains.

2. Art in the City (school students) – BMW X2 M35i SUV
Public art in Canberra has been central to our city’s design and identity. Public Art fosters community pride and a sense of belonging, and outstanding examples can be found throughout our city and suburbs. In the city, enjoy Ethos (Tom Bass, 1961), Frank Hinder’s mosaic in Monaro Mall (1963) and Jan Brown’s Icarus (2009). North Canberra is home to Bert Flugelman’s 1979 sculpture and the infamous Owl (Bruce Armstrong, 2011). On the south side, the Moth ascending the capital (Alexander Knox, 2012) and Sculptured Form by Margel Hinder (1970).

3. Designer Makers (Craft ACT members) – BMW 420i Coupe
Many people don’t realise that in our beautiful city, acclaimed makers, artists and designers who could choose to live anywhere in the world choose to live, work and make here in Canberra. The 2021 festival theme of transformation is a celebration of the ways that artists and designers transform raw materials and ideas into objects, spaces, buildings and experiences. Canberra’s thriving craft and design community is made up of jewellers, ceramic and textiles artists, glass and furniture makers who bring creative and unique perspectives to the cultural life of our city. This category is open to current members of Craft ACT.

4. Mid-Century Mecca (open) – BMW 330e plug-in hybrid sedan
Visitors to Canberra are often surprised to learn that Canberra is a mecca of mid-century design, public art and architecture. The DESIGN Canberra festival will focus on design in the 1970s and Canberra is a goldmine of gems from iconic buildings such as the School of Music (Daryl Jackson and Evan Walker, 1976), Clem Cummings concrete bus shelters (1975), experimental co-housing projects such as Wybalena Grove by Michael Dysart (1974), and fantastic public artworks like Sculptured Form by Margel Hinder (1970).

Winners in each category will see their design wrapped around a brand new BMW which will be exhibited throughout the DESIGN Canberra festival at signature events from 8-28 November 2021. Winners of each category will receive a fantastic prize pack (valued at $1000 each) including:

• A $250 cash prize and a BMW for the Weekend* from Canberra BMW (*conditions apply)
• Private wine tasting with cheese board and a bottle of wine from Lake George Winery (University, Craft ACT Member, Open categories)
• DESIGN Canberra gift bag including a tote bag, badge and Craft ACT voucher (School category)

Entries must be received by Sunday 19 September 2021, 11.59pm and will be judged by a panel of Canberra-based design professionals. Entry to the competition is free.
