Meet the Designers: Anna Sutherland of Maddison Jayne
Sunday, 8 November 2023
Maddison Jayne Design fabrics are designed, hand-printed and sewn in Canberra by local textile designer Anna Sutherland.
Colourful, bold and highly patterned hand-printed fabrics will be on display, alongside bespoke items of furniture, soft furnishings, bedding and gifts.
The DESIGN Canberra team had a chat with Anna about her upcoming pop-up shop as part of ACTivate.
Q. What three words describe your style?
A. COLOURFUL, VIBRANT, PATTERN
Q. How did you get into design?
A. I’ve always enjoyed being creative. I began studying textiles at the ANU School of Art in 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed it. In my first year I decided that when I graduated I was going to do a small business management course and establish my own business specialising in hand-printed fabrics and products. Here I am today – completed my business course and in 2014 my business ‘Maddison Jayne’ began.
Q. What’s your day-to-day like?
A. Almost daily I am busy drawing, designing, printing, cutting or sewing. There is rarely a day that I am not planning a new product, designing fabric or restocking for my next market or pop-up shop!
Q. What projects are you currently developing?
A. A new project I am enjoying at the moment is painting silk scarves, a new addition and variation to my hand-printed scarves.
Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?
A. Creating new designs and planning new projects. I also enjoy markets and exhibitions and chatting to other creatives.
Q. What do you find most rewarding about your design career?
A. Having the opportunity and the courage to launch my business ‘Maddison Jayne’ has been very rewarding. I have had the opportunity to work with customers to design fabrics, unique cushion ranges and rugs.
Q. What do you have planned for DESIGN Canberra?
A. The ‘Maddison Jayne’ pop-up shop will be full of one-off homewares and gifts created from my hand-printed fabrics. I have products ranging from homewares items such as bedheads, ottomans, lampshades and cushions through to products that make great gifts, hand-printed and painted scarves, toiletry and cosmetic bags and tea towels.
