DESIGN Canberra, which celebrates and promotes Canberra as a global city of design, is pleased to welcome the Canberra Centre as the exclusive major festival partner in 2019 and 2020.
“The Canberra Centre’s attention to detail, enthusiasm and commitment to quality design is perfectly aligned to the design values promoted in the ACT’s fastest-growing festival. We look forward to sharing the successful DESIGN Canberra platform with the Canberra Centre to grow our audiences, support emerging and local designers and promote design excellence. We will present signature exhibitions, designer activations and artist installations in and around the award-winning heritage architecture of the Canberra’s Centre’s iconic Monaro Mall,” said Rachael Coghlan, CEO and Artistic Director of Craft ACT and the DESIGN Canberra festival.
In 2018, Universal Design Studio and Mather Architecture won the National Award for Interior Architecture at the National Architecture Awards for their redevelopment of Monaro Mall. An ambitious project, the practice team successfully and sensitively restored, revealed, reinstated and reimagined Monaro Mall’s heritage values, intent and finishes. Monaro Mall is now a light-filled and material-rich contemporary retail transformation which demonstrates the powerful potential of adaptive reuse of heritage buildings over demolition.
Listed for more than 30 years on the ACT register of significant 20th century architecture, Whitehead and Payne Architects’ 1963 Monaro Mall had been obscured by multiple renovations. The redevelopment paid respect to the mid-century modernist beginnings of Australia’s first fully enclosed shopping mall.
As well as an annual ACT Government grant, DESIGN Canberra festival is supported by a range of like-minded sponsors from retail, property, education, industry and government. The DESIGN Canberra exclusive major partner category is the most visible commercial partner in the festival. Together with the festival, the major partner will host curated design experiences which celebrate innovation, experimentation and collaboration in design.

See limited edition pieces made by established and emerging Australian designers, artists and makers in the 2019 Design Auction exhibition. This is your only chance to see works from the 2019 DESIGN Canberra auction before they’re sold! Every year, DESIGN Canberra gives design-lovers the chance to have their own piece of contemporary design with the festival’s annual design auction at the festival opening party. Limited edition and one-off pieces from leading designers will be open for bidding on the auction website.
“We have selected some of the most exciting designers from the Canberra region and beyond across a range of mediums to feature new work in the 2019 Design Auction. Last year’s event was a huge success – with 21 of the 22 works selling on the night – and 2019 will be no exception,” said Rachael Coghlan CEO of Craft ACT and Artistic Director of DESIGN Canberra 2019.
“The Canberra Centre will host a preview of the works selected for the auction – a perfect marriage of award-winning design across architecture, object design and contemporary craft”.
The 2019 Design Auction is presented by Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre in partnership with the Canberra Centre.
