John Andrews in Canberra: Instagram competition returns for 2019

Calling all photography, architecture and Canberra enthusiasts! DESIGN Canberra’s annual photography competition is officially open. We are seeking new photography which responds to Canberra’s unique design identity and the festival theme of Utopia through the architecture of John Andrews.

Known for his bold, brutalist designs, John Andrews AO is one of Australia’s most internationally renowned architects. His key buildings in Australia are the Cameron Offices (Canberra) and the American Express Tower (Sydney). Andrews’ Canberra projects include the Callam Office complex, the Cameron Office complex, the University of Canberra student residences and Toad Hall residence at the Australian National University.

Design lovers, architecture enthusiasts and photographers are encouraged to take a closer look at their surroundings and draw out the details of this city’s unique connection to Andrews’ architecture for the chance to have their work included in a DESIGN Canberra exhibition and to win great prizes from Photo Access and Canberra City Framing.  Up to six finalists will be selected to have their work professionally printed and framed for inclusion in the exhibition, so it’s important that you have a high resolution copy of your image (300dpi, 5mb) available if selected.

Entry is easy, simply follow @designcanberrafestival on Instagram, upload entries and tag each submission with #designcanberra and #dcphotocomp2019 #open or #student (your profile will also need to be set to public)

The open award category is open to anyone aged 16 or over, just add #open to your image to be considered in this category.  High school and college students in year levels 7-12 are invited to submit works in the student category by adding #student to their entry.

Submissions are now open, and will close at 4pm on Friday 4th October 2019.  Winners will be announced at Creative Careers, hosted by Radford College on Tuesday 5 November 2019.  Creative Careers is a DESIGN Canberra event which offers a chance for people of all ages to hear from leading creatives offering tips and insights into building a sustainable and satisfying career pathway in the design arts.

This year’s competition is generously supported by Canberra City Framing and PhotoAccess, the ACT and region’s centre for contemporary photography, film-making and the media arts.
