Architecture + design + craft = an open home with a difference. Explore the living rooms of acclaimed Canberra houses and discover pop-up exhibitions with works for sale by local artists, makers and craft practitioners.
Home by Holly is a proud sponsor of the Design Canberra Living Rooms program. Each week Holly Komorowski from Home by Holly talks about the architectural features of the houses and captures the beautiful elements of the homes. These videos are a celebration of the things we love in Design Canberra.
Before the festival, Holly discusses why design is increasingly important in Canberra along with Design Canberra CEO Rachel Coghlan and Edition’s Alice Sutton.
Why design matters in Canberra
Design Canberra is in full flight and on 17 November Arquitectura’s gorgeous house at 22 Frome St in Griffith will frame work from Edition’s Alice Sutton and jeweller Phoebe Porter. Genevieve Jacobs asks Alice, Design Canberra CEO Rachel Coghlan and Holly Komorowski why design is increasingly important in Canberra. House open 12.30 – 2 pm.

In week one Holly explores Rob Henry Architect’s Charred Timber House and Loft House, as well as Light House Architecture and Science BareStone house.
The Loft House new addition by Rob Henry Architects features a dramatic volume and a loft space that hangs from the exposed timber roof structure. Crafted from basic materials with thoughtful detailing, the interior palette is restricted to three materials: white painted surfaces; recycled blackbutt; and exposed pine structural elements.
BareStone House by Light House Architecture and Science is a highly sustainable, space-efficient and energy-efficient home that sits beautifully in its surroundings in Hackett. The house has been designed to suit Canberra’s climate and the needs of an active family, without excess.

In week two we explored Ben Walker’s architect’s DC House, Arquitectura’s Sutton House and Architecture Republic’s, Waramanga House. Holly talks to pop up exhibition artists, Tania Vrancic (ceramics), Phoebe Porter (metals) and Alice Sutton (fashion) about their craft and favourite works from their own collections.
The first house of the weekend was the DC House project by Ben Walker Architects and recognises the sense of craft evident in the original heritage cottage and reveals the surrounding mature landscape. Second up was a prominent stone façade and large overhanging plywood roof frame the entry to Sutton House by Arquitectura, a beautifully crafted and energy efficient home reflecting the owners’ lifestyle and interests. Lastly, the Waramanga House is a smart, comfortable home for the 21st century by Architecture Republic. A spine of rammed earth anchors the home and produces a high-performance thermal envelope and an energy efficient home.
